Kevin Appears on new Don Harvey LP

Kevin McKinney was mentioned in the Austin Chronicle’s review of the new LP, Light Shines Through (Freedom Records), by ex-Storyville drummer Don Harvey. McKinney appears as a guest alongside Harvey and other music staples like Ephraim Owens, Stefano Intelisano, David Grissom and Glenn Fukunaga on an LP that Alejandro Escovedo says “has a romantic quality with the feel of a dreamy landscape that takes me into a world of colors and sound.” You can find it at Waterloo, CDBaby and Don’s own website. Happy new year to everyone on the internets! We hope you survived NYE with little more than a minor hangover. It was noticeably slow around here for a few weeks, but life has picked up with FREE WEEK shows here in Austin. And good news is Kevin just announced that he’ll be performing live on January 22 at Hotel Vegas with details forthcoming.

In other news, the Austin Chronicle has released the list of nominees for this year’s class of the Austin Texas Music Hall of Fame. The list includes Joe Rockhead, the band that officially introduced Bob Schneider to many of us. Be sure and grab your ballot cast your vote for them (Soulhat was already inducted in 2006), but also take time to write-in Little Sister/Sister 7, who deserve to be there as much as anybody.

This week, Kevin is due to play two shows at Austin’s venerable Continental Club. On Wednesday, 12/7 catch the Kevin McKinney Band, at midnight after Jon Dee Graham. Cover is $8. Then on Thursday, 12/8 it’ll be Black Sabbath night with McKinney (Whack Sabbath). Also at midnight. We suspect this might mean Adam Bork is in town, but you’ll have to show up to find out.

Soulhat performs back where it all began

Its been about ten years since Soulhat last performed at Southwestern, the college where the band was formed back in 1990. On November 5, they the classic lineup reunited for a two-hour “unannounced” show during Southwestern’s homecoming and reunion weekend. About 200 people saw the band performing a nice cross-section of their repertoire, mixing-up old tunes like Old Man Ken and Garbage Man with barn-burning renditions of the stuff that made them famous – Psychological Bone, Wiggin’ and Bonecrusher. The band closed the night with “Love Me Now.” See a couple of photos here and here.

Public Domain Protest Song

Adam McKay, film director and co-founder (with Will Ferrell) of Funny or Die, announced a new music project this morning called Public Domain Protest Song.

According to Adam, “Music is an entertainment slash art form that doesn’t suffer B.S. well…but other than Green Day we haven’t had a lot of protest music over the past few decades….I’m always amazed how even small local bands stay away from the fact that our country is being ripped off, polarized and lied to by huge corporations that don’t pay taxes and weirdo billionaires who inherited all their money. Finally some musician friends of mine in Austin, Texas (the home of music as far as I’m concerned) called my bluff and said, “If you write the lyrics we’ll record the songs.” So we did. The band is called English Teeth (Kevin Hoetger, Kevin McKinney, and Kyle Crusham)…we recorded for four days in Austin and it was a blast. And just like that we were ready to release our EP of protest music.”

Their site – Public Domain Protest Song – launched today and features a free download of the EP they recorded along with an encouragement for other artists to do the same. Entertainment Weekly has already picked-up on the story, and we suspect that many others will as well.

Austin Chronicle Releases “Music Anthology”

This month, the Austin Chronicle will release the Austin Chronicle Music Anthology, a 336 page compilation of the best of the Chronicle’s music journalism. Along with the expected features on Austin artists like Roky Erickson, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Daniel Johnston, you’ll also find plenty of tasty bits on Austin’s darker and stranger side – from The Butthole Surfers and FuckEmos to Ed Hall and Timbuk 3. We understand there is at least one piece about our very own Soulhat, as well.
